Zach Walsh put his name at the top of the list this week.

Walsh, a senior at Basalt High School, broke the school record in the 1,600-meter run at the annual Mickey Dunn Invitational track and field meet in Grand Junction.

Walsh, a state qualifier in track as well as cross country, smashed the school record in winning the 1,600 in Grand Junction. He ran 4 minutes, 26.28 seconds to win the event at the big meet at Stocker Stadium.

The previous school record was set in 2011 by Connor Roper (4:32.88).

The Longhorns also collected a host of other top finishes at the final track meet before this week’s spring break.

Morgan Ash, a Basalt freshman, finished third in the girls high jump at the Mickey Dunn meet. She jumped 4-8 for third place.

The Basalt freshmen girls added more points for the Longhorns.

Kaylin Williams finished sixth in the high jump (4-6).

The Basalt girls 800-medley relay team finished fourth behind Nicole Alvarado, Michell Cabrera, Violet Lepe and Becca White.

Alvarado, a freshman, also finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in Grand Junction.

The Basalt girls finished tied for 11th out of the 22 teams entered.

The Basalt boys finished 14th out of 22 teams.

Basalt senior Jake Levy, the conference lineman of the year in football, placed eighth with a personal best in the discus. He threw 119-7.

Jake Schiesser, a Basalt junior, finished fourth in the long jump.

The Basalt tracksters will be back in action at the Glenwood Springs JV Meet, set for Tuesday afternoon.

The next big meet for the Longhorns will be the Eagle Valley Invitational in Gypsum on April 4.
