Snowmass trail talks: New trails on the mountain

Editor's note: The Snowmass Sun and the town of Snowmass Parks, Recreation and Trails Department have partnered to launch "Trail Talks," a biweekly series that will explore trail issues, etiquette and rules for shared trail use in the village.

It doesn't matter what your skill level is; new trails are always fun. They give us a new perspective on an area we may never enjoy if the trail wasn't there. The town of Snowmass Village partnered with Aspen Skiing Co. to create "Gateway Trails" on the west side of Snowmass Mountain, a youth- and family-friendly trails systems.

Families come to Snowmass Village for various reasons, but our expansive trails system leaves them curious. Climbing South Rim then back up the Brush Creek Bike Path to the mall may leave visitors exhausted at the thought.

To put on a full-face helmet plus other protective gear and load a downhill bike on the gondola can be intimidating if you've never been on a mountain bike and/or traveled from sea level.

With these possible impediments in mind, there was need for a beginner-intermediate loop system, i.e. the "Gateway Trails," to introduce the sport in a safe and structured way. These trails will help visitors build self-confidence, altitude adaptation and the skills needed to pursue the town's trails system or Skico's bike park.

The Discovery Trail is an uphill-only bike and multi-directional hiking trail approximately 2 miles long. It has exceptional viewing opportunities of the Ziegler Pond and valley splendor.

The Discovery Trail will end and give you the opportunity to continue uphill on the rerouted Village Bound Trail (1/2-mile to Campground Connector) or enjoy a fun descent down to the mall (2 miles). The entire Village Bound Trail is multi-directional for both hikers and bikers.

The Campground Connector (1.5 miles) was completed in the fall and is a great addition to this loop. This trail is a treat in both directions and makes for a bigger loop adding the Ditch and Sleigh Ride Trails. You can find a map at http://www.snowmass recreation.com/282/Snowmass-Summer -Trails or any of our trailhead kiosks.

We hope to soon construct a multidirectional trail from the mall to the Discovery and Village Bound trails. In the meantime, look for an orange picnic table it will serve as the hub for both trails. If you have questions, please call 970-922-2249.

Enjoy this new addition to the west side of Snowmass Mountain.
