History: Building a ski school

A photograph of Arne Marthinsson, Stein Eriksen and Magne Nostdahl taken circa 1980 by Mary Eshbaugh Hayes. All three men are Norwegians who taught skiing at Snowmass. Marthinsson, a native of Bergen, Norway, originally came to Aspen in 1959 to work with the Stein Eriksen Ski School at Highlands. He also had a contracting business during the summers with fellow instructor Nostdahl. In the winter season of 1963-64, Marthinsson left for a Chicago-area resort, Fox Trails Sports Area in Cary, Ill., to be the ski school director along with his wife who worked as an administrative assistant. He later returned to Snowmass after Eriksen moved to the resort as the head of its new ski school.
