The Snowmass Village Town Council will meet for monthly work sessions in February as the board, which includes three brand-new members, prepares to deal with tough community issues.

Work sessions are generally public meetings for a board in which no decisions can be made or actions taken. Snowmass Village council members have said they want to hold work sessions in order to become more educated about some significant issues coming up, including the Base Village amendment application, a new lease for Krabloonik and increasing public dissent for a roundabout planned on Brush Creek Road.

The first session is from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 9. The sessions are planned to repeat every second Monday of the month.

In the first meeting, the council is expected to set its agendas for the upcoming sessions as well as establish what Town Manager Clint Kinney called “ground rules” for work sessions, such as whether the officials will allow public comment during them and whether they will be televised and streamed live online, as the council’s regular meetings are.

Part-time resident Mel Blumenthal urged the council at its regular meeting Jan. 20 to make the sessions available online. Snowmass was the first municipality in the valley to post videos of its meetings online, and it should continue that tradition of transparency, he said.

“Work sessions are a fabulous idea,” Blumenthal said. “Those of us who aren’t here all the time or work in the village and can’t make it, they should have the opportunity to learn with you.”

However, some of the newest council members said they would feel more comfortable having at least one meeting without cameras.

In addition to the new work sessions, the council also will have a retreat on Feb. 5. When a new council forms in Snowmass Village, the officials often gather to set goals and a strategic plan for their new terms, and that is set for this week’s retreat.

The council also has a regular meeting on Feb. 2. The council and the Planning Commission will have a joint meeting then for an initial presentation of Related Colorado’s sketch plan for amendments to Base Village.

The agenda and related materials will be posted on Jan. 29 to the town’s website at http://www.tosv.com.
