Sheriff’s Office identifies Aspen cyclist

A cyclist who died Saturday afternoon while climbing Independence Pass east of Aspen was identified Sunday by the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office as Steven Alan Menscher, 51, of Aspen.

The incident occurred at about mile marker 60 on Highway 82 while the cyclist was on the ascent, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The cyclist collapsed a short distance from the summit of Independence Pass. No further information on the cause of death was available Sunday from the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities received the call about the incident at 1:36 p.m. Witnesses on the scene began CPR before emergency responders arrived. The cyclist was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
