Seventh Street to close under Grand Avenue bridge on workdays

Staff report

The Grand Avenue bridge project gets more real each week.

Seventh Street is temporarily closed in both directions during construction hours for two weeks between Colorado and Cooper avenues, which started Monday and continues through Jan. 29 for safety reasons associated with the Grand Avenue bridge project.

The street closure is in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Grand Avenue wing street also is closed to vehicle traffic during the coming two weeks.

The wing street is scheduled to close permanently March 1.

"This temporary closure is required so that the contractor has safe, controlled access to this area for substructure shoring work and installation of a temporary storm drain," according to bridge project officials.

With part of Seventh Street converted to an eastbound one-way street, traffic clogs were already occurring last week in the early evening.

Part of the early bridge work is to haul material for construction of a causeway, or construction platform, in the Colorado River. About eight trucks per hour, or roughly 75 trucks per day, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday will be crossing Seventh Street.

The causeway will be roughly 500 feet long and 50 to 75 feet wide. It will be made out of rock and will be removed when the project is complete. Cranes, drills and trucks will be staged on the causeway.

Other early impacts of the two-year project to replace the Grand Avenue bridge:

• Parking along the north lane of Seventh Street from Colorado to Cooper avenues will be closed throughout Phase I and Phase II of the project.

• The sidewalk along the north side of Seventh Street will be closed between Colorado Avenue and the pedestrian bridge throughout Phase I and Phase II. Access to the pedestrian bridge will remain open. Pedestrians should cross Seventh at Cooper.

Bridge project officials want river users' participation in upcoming meetings about temporary river closures this summer. To be added to the project's contact list regarding specific river impacts, email contact information to info@grandavenue bridge.com.
