Please reconsider in Crowley case

Dear Editor:

We were distressed to read in several recent articles and letters to the editor that Aspen patrol officer Jim Crowley has been placed on leave from his position with the Aspen police force after 18 years service ” for his first violation which was not a deliberate act and which caused no harm to anyone.

It would seem a more civilized recourse would be possible for a first offense, such as counseling for an apparently harmless mistake by a longtime respected and liked police officer.

By now, we hope you have discovered there was no deliberate intention by officer Crowley to arrive at work unable to perform his duties. Officer Crowley has always been respectful and courteous to everyone, and he goes beyond the call of duty to help citizens in need. Some of his fellow officers have said they are saddened by the recent action taken against him.

Please reconsider this harsh and seemingly unnecessary termination. We are confident you have discovered the punishment did not fit the crime, and we feel the community would welcome a reversal of this severe action by the police department.

Please reinstate Officer Jim Crowley to his rightful position as a respected member of the Aspen Police Department.

Thank you for your consideration.
