Options for survival not ‘elitist’

Dear Editor:A local leftist describes the possibility of an American or Israeli pre-emptive strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities as despicable and elitist. Islam is in the throes of a toxic combination of religious fundamentalism and political fascism epitomized by Iran’s Ahmadinejad.Militant Islam is a worldwide threat. While leftists have spent decades surrealistically equating Zionism with Nazism, since 1983 Muslim Arab genocide has killed approximately 200,000 black African Christians and animists in southern Sudan. Since early 2000 about 800,000 black Muslims in Darfur have been slaughtered. From Indonesia to Mauritania, Somalia to Afghanistan, Christians are attacked, raped, killed, kidnapped, tortured, exiled, and churches vandalized or burned by Muslim attackers. Hundreds of thousands of Christian Arab Nigerians have been killed over the past 10 years for resisting the imposition of Shari’a law by force of Muslim arms.Ahmadinejad can be stopped short of a pre-emptive strike by a combination of rigorously enforced economic sanctions and nonviolent U.S. intervention in Iranian politics that would strengthen the growing internal opposition movement. There is also the possibility of a naval and air campaign to topple the fundamentalist Iranian regime without a single U.S. soldier setting foot on Iranian soil.If such actions are undermined by attempts at appeasing the Iranian Hitler, an isolated Israel would have to strike before the nuclear facilities become radioactive, in about 18 months; waiting too long could result in massive civilian casualties. What other option would Israel have?Labeling a hypothetical Israeli deterrent action as “elitist,” an adjective robotically repeated by leftists, typifies the lack of reality in their rhetoric. A tiny nation is not arrogantly “elitist” to consider its options for survival as the clock ticks to the day when the dictator committed to its annihilation will possesses the means carry out his threat.Judith KingGlenwood Springs
