John F. Coughenour, Jr.

February 11, 1929 — July 10, 2017

John F. Coughenour, Jr., 88, husband of the late Patricia Blakely Coughenour, passed away, Monday July 10, with his daughter, Debra C. Hanson and her husband Viggo Hall Hanson, by his side, at their home in Wilton, Connecticut.

A life-long Colorado resident, John was born at Porter Hospital in Denver. He graduated from East High School, and then went on to Colorado State University, where he earned Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

After college, John served his country, as a First Lieutenant in the Air Force, flying F 84’s & 86 jets from 1951-55 in Korea.

Afterward, John enjoyed success as an investment advisor in the securities industry, a career that spanned 52 years. He began in 1958 with Dean Witter, moved on to Drexel Burnham, then to Smith Barney and he spent the last 12 years as a Senior Vice President with Merrill Lynch.

John was outgoing, he had a great sense of humor, and he enjoyed socializing with those whom shared his many passions. His plethora of interests included; flying, skiing, golf, horses, training and riding, and all genres of music, art, and history.


He was a member of Cherry Hills Country Club for 42 years, Denver Country Club, Denver Chamber of Commerce, Roundup Riders of the Rockies, the Colorado Ski Corp, a Charter Member the Snowmass Club, and a Supporter of the Denver Art Museum and the Botanical Gardens.

John is also survived by his son-in-law Robert Weil, and by four grandchildren, Jonathan, Brandon, Kevin Weil and Corinne Hanson. In addition to his wife, John was sadly pre-deceased by his children Derek Coughenour and Cherlynn Weil and his grandson, Clayton Hall Hanson.
