John Richard Durrett

John Richard (Dick) Durrett, August 19, 1937 – May 10, 2016, was the first born son of four to Ashton and Flora Durrett. Although he was born in Denver, Dick’s family was from the valley and he lived most of his life here in Glenwood Springs. As a young boy, Dick suffered Polio twice losing approximately 16 months of his youthful activities. This resulted in a conviction to stay as active and healthy as possible. Dick graduated from Colorado State University with a major in Physical Science. As a young man, Dick worked a variety of jobs, but throughout life he carried fond memories of being a hunter in New Zealand, a forester in Alaska, and a ski patrolman at Ajax and Sunlight. After marrying Jacqueline (Jackie) Hill and having his only child Dominic, Dick found a career at Public Service of Colorado. He retired from the Shoshone Hydro-electric Plant in the Glenwood Canyon in 1995. Dick was a man filled with many passions, especially outdoor activities. He involved his family and friends in these experiences whenever possible. He loved to ski, run, hike, climb, ride bicycles and motorcycles, camp, and travel. One of the highlights of his life was taking numerous bicycle tours in both the U.S. and Europe. He leaves his wife Jackie, son Dominic (wife Becka), and grandchildren Miles, Ryder, Fin, and Rose. He is also survived by his three brothers Gregory, Ashton, and Anthony and their wives and families.

After a heroic battle with cancer, Dick passed away quietly at home with his wife at his side on May 10, 2016. A memorial service will be planned for later in the summer. You may honor him by donating to Hospice of the Valley 1901 Grand Ave, Suite 206 Glenwood Springs, CO 81601 or The Calaway-Young Cancer Center 1906 Blake Ave. Glenwood Springs, CO 81601.
