The man killed in a car accident on Highway 82 in the early morning of Saturday was identified Monday by the Garfield County Coroner’s Office as 38-year-old Jose Lewis Castro Lainez.
It is believed that Lainez was from Honduras, according to Deputy Coroner Bill Hodgden. The Coroner’s Office wasn’t able to determine a local address, he said. The Colorado State Patrol released a statement Monday evening that said Lainez was from Basalt.
An autopsy hasn’t been performed yet, so the cause and manner of death haven’t been determined, according to Hodgden.
No identification was found on Lainez, so that slowed the process of confirming who it was, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The Coroner’s Office also said over the weekend it was trying to locate his family before releasing his name.
The accident occurred shortly after midnight near the entrance to Cerise Ranch subdivision, between Catherine Store and El Jebel. Lainez was driving eastbound, or upvalley, in a Toyota sedan when he crossed into the westbound lanes, according to the State Patrol. He struck a Toyota SUV driven by Chris Tipton, 48, of Carbondale. Tipton was in the left lane of the westbound lanes. The crash was head-on. Tipton suffered a broken collarbone.
An emergency medical responder said the driver of the sedan was dead at the scene.
