SALIDA, Colo. ” A 23-year-old hiker has been found alive after taking shelter in a campground restroom overnight in the Monarch Pass region.

Chaffee County Sheriff Tim Walker says Chad Koch of Howard, Colo., was taken to a Salida hospital Tuesday to be treated for exposure and possible frostbite.

Walker says Koch’s dog did not survive the night.

Koch was last heard from Monday afternoon. Temperatures dropped below zero overnight and a storm dropped up to a foot of snow.

Walker says Koch walked to a county road Tuesday morning, discovered a resident plowing snow and asked him to call for help.

Howard is 11 miles southeast of Salida and 105 miles southwest of Denver.
