Miscalculations

Joe Turner’s recent letter, while well-written and interesting, contains incorrect calculations.

Five 30-mile round trips in a 20 miles-per-gallon car with $1.378 gas costs $20.67. The same trips with $1.893 gas costs $28.40.

The difference, during the five-day commuter week, is $7.73 (or $1.55 per day, not $4.06). In a 52-week year, the added cost would be $401.70 (or about $565 if the trip were made 365 days per year) not $1,480.60.
