Man arrested in Basalt for DUI, coke possession

A 21-year-old man pulled over by Basalt police for speeding late Tuesday night was later arrested for felony cocaine possession, according to a police report.

Dersy Bustamante also was charged with DUI, speeding and driving without a valid license.

A Basalt police officer clocked Bustamante driving 72 mph in a 55 mph on Highway 82 in Basalt at about 11 p.m. and pulled him over, according to the police report.

“As I approached the vehicle, I observed the driver … with both hands tightly gripping the steering wheel with an abnormal fixed gaze directly to the front,” Officer Nino Santiago wrote in his report.

The officer also noted a strong odor of alcohol coming from the car, the report states.

Bustamante was able to produce an identification card from Spain as his only identification. He later failed roadside sobriety tests and was arrested, according to the report.

Before placing Bustamante in his police car, Santiago searched him and found a small baggie with white powder inside in his front pocket, the report states.

“I asked Bustamante what was in the baggie, and he advised it was cocaine,” according to the report. “The substance was later tested and confirmed to be cocaine.”
