‘Mamma Mia!’ to lead Theatre Aspen summer season

Staff report

Theatre Aspen will launch its 33rd season with the regional premiere of the Broadway megahit musical “Mamma Mia!,” the nonprofit announced Tuesday.

The musical, based on the songs of ABBA, will open June 24 and run in repertory with the one-man comedy “Buyer and Cellar” and the musical “Dear Edwina” at the Hurst Theatre in Rio Grande Park. The Aspen Theatre Festival, which Theatre Aspen inaugurated last year, will return with showcases of new work at the end of August.

Carbonell Award winner and Theatre Aspen favorite Mark Martino will direct and choreograph “Mamma Mia!” With a book by Catherine Johnson and music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and some songs with Stig Anderson, the musical will run through Aug. 20. The musical director is Eric Alsford, with Vernon Willet serving as Production Stage Manager.

“Buyer and Cellar,” by Jonathan Tolins, will open July 7 and will run through Aug. 19. A director will be announced shortly.

The Theatre for Young Audience series opens July 15 with “Dear Edwina,” featuring book and lyrics by Marcy Heisler and music by Zina Goldrich. Directed by Theatre Aspen executive artistic director Paige Price, the musical will be presented on weekend mornings, from July 15 through Aug. 15.

The festival lineup for the Aspen Theatre Festival will be announced in the spring.
