Groups sue BLM over Utah gas wells
August 7, 2008
SALT LAKE CITY ” The Bureau of Land Management is being sued by environmental groups over approval of 25 natural gas wells in central Utah.
The lawsuit contends the wells should have received a more rigorous environmental review before they were approved. The groups voice concern about the effects on nearby Nine Mile Canyon, an area rich with prehistoric rock art.
The wells on the West Tavaputs Plateau were approved by the BLM under a “categorical exclusion” provision allowing certain projects to move ahead without an in-depth examination of potential environmental impacts.
The suit was filed in federal court by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, the Nine Mile Canyon Coalition and The Wilderness Society.
