Group to review Colorado’s rules on fracking

DENVER – A group whose board represents regulators, environmentalists and energy companies plans to review the strength of Colorado’s rules on hydraulic fracturing.

Fracturing, or fracking, is a process that blasts a mix of water, chemicals and sand into rock to free natural gas.

Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission Director Dave Neslin says the review will be conducted by Stronger, which stands for State Review of Oil and Natural Gas Environmental Regulations. Neslin is a board member of Stronger, which receives funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy and the American Petroleum Institute.

The commission is presenting its rules to Stronger this month, and Stronger will report its findings later this year.

It would be up to the commission to decide what’s next if Stronger recommends changes.
