Fisher wins Red Ball $5,000

Aspen Times Staff Report

Suzanne Fisher, an Aspen native who resides in El Jebel, won $5,000 cash in the second annual Red Ball Express, presented April 5 by the Rotary Club of Aspen and Mesa National Bank.

Fisher, who works part time in property management, said she “really isn’t sure what I’ll do with the money, but I’ll definitely be taking my friends and family out to celebrate” the win.

The win came as a total surprise to Fisher, who said she has been “laughing and crying since I found out.

“I really feel like I’ve made a lot of changes in my life during the past year. And I felt like this was a sign,” she said.

The second prize of $1,500 went to Calvin Vaughner of Basalt. Tom Durick of Arizona was the third-place winner, and he received $500 in cash.

Three other lucky entrants received dinner for two: Denise Rupinski of Basalt, Kathryn Fleck of Aspen and Ashley Richardson of Carbondale.

A total of 7,763 chances were sold for the Red Ball Express; the club earned $38,815 from the event, held at Buttermilk Mountain on a chilly Saturday in early April. Course workers released more than 200 big, red bouncy balls down the slopes at precisely 5:31 p.m. Each $5 ticket had two ball numbers assigned to it. The two-ball combination of numbers determined who would be the winners.

The real winners are the nonprofit and human services organizations in the valley who will receive funding from the Mesa National Bank’s Red Ball Express.
