Fire causes $50,000 in damage to house in Basalt

Staff report

The Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District said a fire Thursday caused $50,000 in damages to a home on Hopi Lane.

Basalt Fire was dispatched at approximately 3:35 p.m. to 19 Hopi Lane for a report of smoke coming from a home. Units initially reported moderate smoke from the attic. Crews made an interior attack and stopped the fire before it could damage the inside of the home. In order to completely extinguish the fire, crews had to remove much of the ceiling as well as insulation from the attic. Fire damage was limited, but smoke and structural damage from the firefighting operation was extensive.

There were two people in the home at the time of the fire, but they were notified by a passer-by of the smoke from the attic and escaped unharmed. Initial reports indicated that there could have been two children upstairs, but it was later discovered they were not home at the time. No injuries were suffered, either by the public or fire-service personnel.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but it is believed to have started from an electrical malfunction in the attic area adjacent to the kitchen. The fire was ruled non-suspicious in nature and was likely caused by faulty or worn-out electrical components.

The Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District arrived on the scene four minutes after the dispatch and was there until almost 6 p.m. Basalt Fire responded to the scene with an engine, a ladder, two ambulances and 14 personnel. Basalt Fire was assisted by the Snowmass-Wildcat Fire Protection District, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, the Basalt Police Department and Holy Cross Energy.
