Dog doings result in Pitkin County citations
June 3, 2011
ASPEN – Pitkin County Open Space and Trails rangers have been issuing citations for dog infractions of late, including the first tickets to be issued in association with the newly opened Droste open space.
Three individuals received warnings Tuesday for riding horses in a closed area. They rode from Cozy Point Ranch, intending to access Droste ridge from the Cozy Point South property at the intersection of Highway 82 and Brush Creek Road, according to ranger John Armstrong. In addition, two of them were cited for having dogs off leash, he said.
They could also have been cited for having their pooches in an area that is off-limits to dogs, as both Cozy Point South and the Droste property are closed to dogs under an interim management plan in place for the open space parcels.
The only access to Droste at present is Radar Road, accessed off Owl Creek Road on the back side of the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport.
In addition, citations were issued last weekend to two individuals – one at the base of Smuggler Mountain Road near Aspen and one at the base of the Arbaney-Kittle Trail near Basalt – for failing to clean up after a dog.
In each case, the citations carry a $100 fine for a first offense, Armstrong said.
