DNC, Aspen offer carbon offsets
August 22, 2008
ASPEN ” Attendees at the Democratic National Convention in Denver will be able to offset greenhouse-gas emissions created by their visit through a program linked to the city of Aspen.
The Denver Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau unveiled the Carbon Calculator and Offset Program this week. It will allow individuals and groups to measure the carbon footprint resulting from their travel and hotel stays, using the calculator hosted on Denver’s convention and visitor website. They may then purchase carbon offsets that will support greenhouse gas-reduction projects in Colorado.
The Denver bureau is partnering with the city of Aspen and other entities to offer the program to guests and participants at next week’s convention, though the carbon calculator will remain on the bureau’s website as a permanent tool for future conventions in Denver.
Once a participant calculates their carbon footprint, he or she can purchase offsets through Aspen’s website, http://www.canarytags.com. Aspen is the first local community partner in the Colorado Carbon Fund. As such, it the city was able to offer to sell offsets to convention participants, said Kim Peterson, Aspen’s Canary Initiative director.
