Communities want drilling study

Aspen, CO Colorado

GRAND JUNCTION ” Four Western Slope communities want the Bureau of Land Management to study the health effects of future oil and gas development as part of a study of resource management plan revisions.

Pitkin and Eagle counties, along with Rifle and Carbondale said the BLM needs to look at pollution, drug abuse, traffic accidents and other factors resulting from drilling.

Researchers in June presented findings from a similar assessment conducted for Garfield County, which leads the state in drilling activity. They found no health crisis related to the industry, but raised some concerns, particularly about the levels of cancer-causing benzene in drilling areas.

BLM spokesman David Boyd said the agency plans to incorporate Garfield County study’s findings into its resource management plans.
