Bell ringers needed

Dear Editor:To all the good people who care and share: This letter is a plea to all caring individuals to come forth as bell ringers to help tend the kettles at City and Clark’s markets this holiday season. The Roaring Fork Valley has seen tremendous growth over the past two decades. The needs of the working poor and families who need emergency help have also grown exponentially. This has been a daunting task for our local churches and charitable agencies in the valley. With the help of kettle tenders at Christmastime, local churches and charities in the valley can rely on the help of the Salvation Army to help them meet the needs of the working poor throughout the year, as “need knows no season.”Your local Salvation Army is looking for bell ringers to station outside Clark’s and City markets. We need you to give two or more hours of your time for one or more days. You may choose a time that fits your schedule. Just stop by Clark’s or City Market for a sign-up sheet or call Jim Markalunas at 925-7071 and leave a message.”To share is to care.” Knowing that you are helping will make you feel good! I need your help! So please volunteer! All the monies that go into the kettles are used right here in the valley. The kettle funds are used principally as a safety net for those who need short-term help. Through your local Salvation Army unit, financial assistance is available. Prescription help, rent assistance to prevent eviction and utility disconnects are some of the ways we help the working poor.Last year, 10 percent of your kettle funds were used for local LIFT-UP food and clothing needs. Last year we raised $5,650 from the Aspen kettles. This season, we want to raise $8,000 from Aspen kettles to help the poor who are without jobs, food or shelter and need your help. With your help we can do it! If you can’t help, then make a donation. You can mail your check directly to the Salvation Army, PO Box 2964, Glenwood Springs, CO 81602. All checks should note “For local use only.”If you want to be a kettle tender and bell ringer, please contact me at 925-7071 ASAP. We need your help as we plan to station kettle tenders at both markets. Can you help us to help those who help others?During this holiday season, let us be beacons of hope for the poor and needy. For it is in sharing our blessings that God will continue to bless you and America. Happy holidays to one and all!Jim MarkalunasAspen
