Aspen Institute events slated for Thursday, Friday

The Aspen Institute has three events scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 14, and Friday, Aug. 15. Tickets to each event are $20 and are on sale at http://www.aspenshowtix.com.

McCloskey Speaker Series

From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Paepcke Auditorium, the McCloskey Speaker Series will feature a conversation with Robert Mankoff, cartoon editor of The New Yorker. More than 950 of his cartoons have been published in the magazine including its best-selling cartoon (captioned “No, Thursday’s out. How about never — is never good for you?”).



Conversations with American Enterprise Institute Scholars

The Institute will present “Conversations with American Enterprise Institute Scholars” from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Paepcke Auditorium.




The panel will be broken up into the following three segments.

• Part 1, 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. — Karlyn Bowman, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, will speak on “80 Days and Counting to Election 2014: What to Watch,” in conversation with Carolyne Heldman, executive director of Aspen Public Radio.

• Part 2, 2:20 p.m. to 3:05 p.m. — Jim C. Capretta, visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, will analyze the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act during the segment “The Key Features of a Better Plan than the ACA,” in conversation with Dan Bonk, CEO of Aspen Valley Hospital.

Part 3, 3:10 p.m. to 3:55 p.m. — Michael Auslin, resident scholar and the director of Japan Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, will discuss current relations between the U.S. and Asia, during the final segment, “Ocean of Risk: China’s Rise, Asia’s Dangers, and America’s Role,” in conversation with Ken Adelman, former ambassador to the U.N.

Fireside Chat and Reception

Friday at the Doerr-Hosier Center, author Andrew Kaufman will speak. A reception is set from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. , and Kaufman will give his presentation from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Kaufman is award-winning teacher of Russian language, literature, and culture, and author of a new book “Give War and Peace a Chance: Tolstoyan Wisdom for Troubled Times.”
