Bovino selected for opthalmology honor
Dr. Jerry Bovino has been selected as the 2014 Howe Medal Winner in ophthalmology.
The Howe Medal generally is considered to be the highest and most prestigious award in the field of ophthalmology. It is named for Lucien Howe, who was born in 1848 in Maine. Howe graduated from Bowdoin College in 1870 and studied medicine at Harvard. He was regarded as one of the greatest ophthalmologists of his era.
Howe established the Howe Medals to recognize ophthalmologists who have made seminal contributions to the field.
Bovino, an Aspen resident and a retired professor of ophthalmology at the Medical College of Ohio, was chosen because of his body of research in vitreoretinal surgery. Bovino invented the intraoperative use of the laser during retinal-detachment surgery and wrote and edited the world’s first textbook of macular surgery.
He also was one of the founders of the American Society of Retina Specialists, where he has served as both president and founding director.
Bovino has been a local host on Community Grassroots Television for more than 10 years. He will receive the medal in Buffalo, N.Y., in June.
Pitkin Solid Waste Center takes part in donation of bikes to Dine’ Bike Project
The Pitkin County Solid Waste Center and its Motherlode Mercantile shop were involved in a collaborative project where 126 bikes, bike parts, and wheels were donated to the nonprofit, NavajoYES.
