ACES Thursday talk looks at birds and ecosystems
Ryan Summerlin February 1, 2014
The Naturalist Nights presentation Thursday at Aspen Center for Environmental Studies will look at the connection between bird species and healthy riparian ecosystems.
Dee Malone will make her presentation at 7 p.m. at ACES’ Hallam Lake headquarters. The potential of riparian areas to sustain a large diversity of wildlife has been compromised by development, deforestation, grazing, beaver eradication, dams and recreation. Malone will explain how bird species can be an indicator of ecosystem health and how they are essential to identifying appropriate restoration and conservation strategies.
Malone teaches ecology, and sustainability and conservation biology for the Sustainability Department at Colorado Mountain College. Her presentation, “Songbirds as Indicators of Healthy Riparian Ecosystems” is free. The series is presented by ACES, Wilderness Workshop and Roaring Fork Audubon.
