A Habitat for hope

Dear Editor:I am writing this letter to thank the community for all their support on building the Habitat duplex in Carbondale. I appreciate all the support from everyone. Thanks for all the weekends given up to make our dreams come true.Being selected for a Habitat home has affected my children’s and my life in many ways. First, it is comforting to know that I have something which is my own. I will now have a safe and secure home for my children to live in without worrying about when the next move is. Throughout the process of Habitat, I have learned so many skills. I had the opportunity to learn how to use new tools and learn building techniques. All of these skills will help me live more independently and also give me great satisfaction knowing that I was involved in building my own home.Receiving a Habitat home has taught me a great deal about the community that I live in and what a caring place this is. It feels good to know there are so many people out there that want to help, but also never look down on me or my family while helping. I have learned that no matter what the action, everyone can do something to help someone else in their community. The house has also had a great effect on my five children. Juan thinks the process teaches responsibility and to respect their house because they know how much work went into it. He is also excited to meet new friends in the neighborhood. They also all comment on how thankful they are for all of the people that have helped build the house and just for being picked! Armando is of course very thankful to know that he has a house to live in with his mom forever (or so he thinks!).Thank you all for everything; we really appreciate everything.Josefa MayoCarbondale
