A great basketball camp

In August, I attended both the junior and senior Aspen Basketball Academy which was held at Aspen High School. Due to construction at the high school, the camp was postponed for two years, but once it came back, it was better than ever.

Coach Steve Ketchum (Coach K) from Aspen High and many other volunteers were responsible for getting this program started up again. I’d especially like to thank the ABA head coach, Kevin Pritchard, of the Kansas City Knights.

It was amazing to have coaches from all over Colorado working with us. Also, a huge thanks goes out to all the sponsors that helped us bring the camp back.

Two weeks before the camp, KNFO and Alpine Bank sponsored a Hot Shot Competition. Winners of each age group were awarded a full scholarship to the junior or senior Aspen Basketball Academy. Fortunately, I was one of those winners. It was amazing how community members pitched in to put this on.

As a camper, I learned many new skills through daily drills and watching some incredible talent from all over Colorado. This year’s camp was well organized, challenging and included guest speakers from all over. We had college players from Texas Tech along with division-one head coaches.

The senior camp presented a guest speaker who was the head coach of the CSU basketball team. He gave a very inspirational speech to all the campers. The camp of 2003 was great. I look forward to participating in the Aspen Basketball Academy next year along with all my basketball friends.
