Basalt ice rink ready for debut

Basalt is looking for assistance from Mother Nature to get a small ice rink opened in Lions Park.

The Basalt Ice Rink will make its grand opening at 10 a.m. Saturday, weather permitting, according to Lisa DiNardo, who headed the project for the town staff. Low temperatures are needed to freeze the final layer of ice, DiNardo said. The weather looks promising. The forecast lows in Basalt were 12 for Thursday night and 14 for tonight.

Assuming the weather cooperates, there will be hot chocolate and s’mores around a fire pit outside the rink, DiNardo said.

The rink is located between the Wyly Community Arts Center and the stage in Lions Park. The rink is family-friendly. It isn’t intended to be a “puck rink” used for hockey, according to DiNardo.

Several entities helped Basalt get the rink in place. The Lions Club donated the funds used to purchase a kit for the 28-by-52-foot rink. The Basalt Fire Department assisted several times in supplying water to create the sheet of ice. The Glenwood Springs Recreation Department donated 15 pairs of hockey skates. The Basalt Thrift Store provided four pairs of figure skates.

Although those skates are available, skaters are advised to bring their own equipment.
