On The Hill: A New Years Day tradition: hiking with the Hondog

On the Hill, brought to you by The Steadman Clinic and the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, brings you a video report showcasing Aspen's ski conditions every day. | |

Aspen official report: 2" of fresh powder overnight in Aspen. 3" at Snowmass. 2.5" in Emma.

Aspen Times field report: Today's On The Hill is a traditional New Years Day morning hike with Hondo, a real news hound. Our intrepid reports hiked "The Green Gate" trail off of West Sopris Creek Road in the Emma area. There, they found 2-3" of new snow to walk in, partly sunny skies, and temps in the low 30's.

Liftline status: No liftlines on the flanks of Sopris, but we imagine that is not the case in Aspen. The Silver Queen Gondola is expected to reopen sometime this afternoon.

Breakdown: There is nothing like a nice quiet hike to reflect on the year that has passed and the new one that is upon us! Get out and up on the hill! It's a semi-powder day and a brave new world in Colorado!

Snowcast: Chance of snow today, then clearing for a few days, with another weak storm expected towards the weekend.
