Basalt Middle School earns recognition

Basalt Middle School received the Colorado Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award for the fourth year in a row earlier this month.

The school is one of only five middle schools in the state that have received the special designation. The award goes to schools that demonstrate excellent academic student growth.

“The achievement confirms that we are focused on student learning, professional development and curriculum alignment,” Roaring Fork School District Superintendent Diana Sirko said in a statement. “We take these awards very seriously and are very proud of our team. Staff, teachers and administrators work hard every day and don’t expect an award. When they receive one, it proves they’re doing their job passionately and with persistence and dedication.”

Basalt Middle School Principal Jeremy Voss said in a statement that the school’s success is due to the collective effort of teachers, students and parents and the development of schoolwide strategies including after-school homework help and incorporating Carol Dweck’s Growth Mindset, which emphasizes dedication and hard work.

Basalt Middle School also has been recognized as a 2012 Colorado Trailblazer School to Watch and a National School to Watch. Voss said the school’s goal remains to ensure that students are engaged in challenging and meaningful work and to close achievement gaps between students.

“It is a common occurrence to have 75 to 100 students and staff extending the school day an hour to ensure that students learn key concepts,” Voss said. “This requires parental support as well as extra effort by teachers and students. That makes a big difference in what we’re able to achieve. We also put a lot of emphasis into developing a strong school culture that lives by our core values. This statewide recognition provides affirmation that we are making progress toward achieving our goals for student learning.”
