More Buddy Program thanks
On behalf of the Buddy Program staff, board of directors and the nearly 1,000 youth that we serve in the valley, I would like to extend a huge, heartfelt thank-you to the Hickory House for once again selecting the Buddy Program as the beneficiary of their annual Thanksgiving Day community dinner!
Owner Paul Dioguardi, the fantastic Hick House staff, and all of the volunteers who contribute their time during their days off are heroes and set a shining example of the spirit of the holidays. The event would not have been possible without generous contributions from Alsco Linen, Aspen Caterers, Neal Henley, the Chris King family, the Luu family, Main Street Bakery, Paradise Bakery and U.S. Food Service. And thank you to the Aspen Daily News and Aspen Times for helping to publicize the event!
Thanks to all of you in the community who came out for dinner; more than $4,300 was raised for the Buddy Program, 100 percent of which supports the youth that we serve. We also had a few people interested in becoming Big Buddies!
The Buddy Program served 945 youth in 2012, up from 650 in 2011, and will serve nearly 1,000 this year. We could not continue to grow our services without the continuing support of all of you in the community. Well, we just finished up with my 17th year hosting the Hickory House Ribs annual Thanksgiving meal. We raised $4,300 for The Buddy Program with everyone’s generous donations. I would like to specially thank the following people and businesses: my staff (Hickory House), the best staff in Aspen; Neal Henley and U.S. Food Service, The Aspen Times, Paradise Bakery, Main Street Bakery, the Luu Brothers and their family, Chris King and his family, Aspen Catering, Alsco Linen, and all the volunteers.

Another challenge awaits
I would like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who supported and attended my fundraiser at the Belly Up. After training Super G the day before my fundraiser, I had a visit with Dr. Steadman at the Vail clinic hoping to get an injection or therapy to improve on going knee pain. I walked away with the knowledge that my patella tendon is trashed and in need of immediate surgery, putting me out of competition for the season. With tickets sold and commitments made, there was little possibility of canceling Friday’s event in consideration of my diagnosis.
I announced the bad news at the event and offered that since I will no longer be able to compete this season, I will return any contributions upon request. After informing the 250 guests of the bad news, I was humbled by the huge support the community showed as they continued to enjoy the evening. While my competition season has been cut way short, I still have the expenses of seven months of this season’s training including five months of dryland training in Park City, two trips to Chile and a month at Copper Mountain. The proceeds of the benefit will help me offset the cost of this season’s training to date.
Any funds raised in excess of US Ski Team fees and training expenses will be used to make a contribution to the Aspen Valley Ski/Snowboard Club and set aside in an account for next year’s return to form.
I’m looking forward to recovering from this injury and coming back stronger than ever next year! With skiing no longer an all-consuming focus this winter, I plan on taking classes at Westminster in Utah or at Denver University to create different skills and passions.
Huge thanks for all the community support — I can’t tell you how much it means to me! I’ll be back.
