If something smells good by Aspen Elementary School on Monday, odds are you’re whiffing some of the barbecue delights prepared by school chef Tenille Folk for students and parents.
The group barbecue is becoming a tradition of sorts at the elementary and middle schools. Folk said she has four barbecues planned this school year, with two at the elementary school and two at the middle school.
“There’s always a huge response at the elementary school with lots of parents showing up,” Folk said. “It’s a great way to get our community involved — and fed.”
Folk has been cooking at the elementary and middle schools for four years. From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, she’ll be serving beef burgers and homemade veggie burgers made mostly from Olathe beans. She’ll have the usual condiments, including homemade ketchup with no high-fructose corn syrup.
There also will be Caesar and kale salads, Olathe corn on the cob, homemade kale chips and watermelon.
The cost for lunch is $4.50 for students and $10 for adults.
Another date to keep in mind will be Sept. 18, which is Colorado Proud School Meal Day. Folk said she plans on serving beef from Crystal River Meats, pasta from Pappardelle’s Pasta in Denver and a salad bar stocked with produce from the school’s Magical Garden.
