Fifty-three individuals had applied for the position of Snowmass fire chief as of late afternoon on Wednesday, the deadline for applications.

The applicants hail from across the country, with “some from the state of Colorado and some from as far as Dubai,” said interim Chief John Mele.

The search process for the Snowmass-Wildcat Fire Protection District’s new leader is still in its preliminary stages, Mele said. A selection committee including the district board of directors, Mele, Capt. Jeff Edelson and physician adviser Gregory Balko will review the applications, but the decision to hire someone ultimately lies with the board. The board next meets at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Snowmass-Wildcat is a paid fire department. The fire chief-district manager position was advertised with a starting salary of $113,836 and a benefits package including a two-bedroom Meadow Ranch residence.
