Aspen police arrested a 24-year-old transient early Tuesday morning who was dancing in the middle of Castle Creek Road while high on methamphetamine, according to court documents.

Nicholas Olson admitted he was high on the drug, and officers found 2.8 grams of it in his pockets, according to a police report filed in Aspen District Court. Olson was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance.

Emergency dispatchers received a report around 7:30 a.m. about a young man with blond hair “described to be dancing in the middle of the road,” according to the report. When officers arrived in the 200 block of Castle Creek Road, however, they could not find the man.

A security officer at Aspen Valley Hospital said the man spilled coffee in the hospital cafeteria and “was acting abnormal,” before leaving, the report states.

Then just after 8 a.m., dispatchers received a report of a man in front of the Aspen Chamber Resort Association on Rio Grande Place “who was spinning around in circles (and) looked like he might be dropping his pants …” according to the report.

When officers arrived at that location, they found Olson, who was confused and disoriented and sweating profusely, with an “extremely” red face and eyes “wide open with a blank stare,” the report states.

“I assisted (another officer) … by keeping Olson as calm as possible in his confused state while he was abruptly swinging his arms as well as dancing around,” Officer Seth Mager wrote in his report. “Olson continually stated that he was afraid of the shadows and that he needed to get away from the shadows.

“Olson also admitted to being on ‘meth.’”

The two officers had to hold on to Olson so he wouldn’t fall over, according to the report.

The two baggies of white powder found on Olson later tested positive for methamphetamine, the report states.
