Security to be tight for Aspen Ideas Festival

Staff report

Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry are among the notable speakers who will appear at the Aspen Ideas Festival which runs June 23-July 2 on the Aspen Institute’s Aspen Meadows campus. For the 12th year, the Festival will feature scientists, artists, politicians, historians, educators and community leaders to discuss current ideas and issues. A full schedule of speakers and sessions can be found at http://www.aspenideas.org.

The arrival of the Vice President, the Secretary of State, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and other cabinet members and world leaders in Aspen for the Ideas Festival will require additional security measures. Therefore, the Secret Service and other agencies will be securing the Aspen Meadows campus and have asked that it be open only to pass-holders for the duration of the Festival. Anyone without a pass will not be allowed on campus during this time. There will also be some traffic disruptions on the morning of July 2 when the Vice President visits, causing potential disruptions for those in the Aspen area.

“I want to apologize in advance for some inconveniences that may occur,” said Walter Isaacson, President and CEO of the Aspen Institute. “We have been working very hard with the Secret Service and our great local law enforcement officials to do all that they possibly can to minimize any delays. I sincerely hope you will take part in some aspect of the festival, whether in person at an event in town or by watching online.”
