Mikaela Shiffrin was skiing strong, charging toward the finish more than a half-second faster than the rest of the field.

She was the last skier in the field to race the giant slalom Friday afternoon at the FIS World Cup Aspen Winternational when she crashed just after the third gate from the finish line.

It was a heartbreaking finish for the Eagle-Vail racer, who had gone into her second run in the lead.

Swiss skier Lara Gut ended up with the win, followed by Austrian Eva-Maria Brem and Italian Federica Brignone.
