Aspen snow slows commute, sends cars off road

Staff report

Snow on Monday morning sent cars off the road and caused a rollover accident near Watson Divide, but no injuries were reported, according to area law enforcement officials.

Aspen police officers responded to half a dozen incidents of cars sliding off the roads before noon, though none were serious, Sgt. Dan Davis said. The rest of the day was quiet, he said.

Pitkin County Deputy Alex Burchetta said the commute upvalley Monday morning was slowed a bit by Colorado Department of Transportation trucks plowing Highway 82 and minor accidents. He recommended that drivers have adequate winter tires and four-wheel drive.

Snow fell most of the day in Aspen and tapered off after about 4:15 p.m. The top of Aspen Mountain recorded 41/2 inches of new snow as of 3 p.m., while a mid-mountain measuring station reported 5.4 inches, according to the Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol’s website.

More snow was forecasted to fall Monday night and Tuesday.
