Lightning-sparked blaze snuffed at Cattle Creek

Staff report

The Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District quickly put down a wildfire Wednesday afternoon in the Cattle Creek area following multiple reports of lightning strikes.

A 50-foot-by-50 foot fire was found burning in the pinion and juniper trees on Meadow View Lane off of Garfield County Road 110 on the way to Colorado Mountain College’s Spring Valley campus. Several vehicles and a fuel tank were within 100 feet of the fire when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters extinguished the fire with water on the apparatus. Crews also were needed to fell several trees in the fire perimeter. No structures were lost and no injuries were reported.

“Our crews initially responded to several calls for multiple lightning strikes in the 110 Road area,” Deputy Chief Rob Goodwin said “The crews did an excellent job of locating the fire and stopping the fire spread quickly in some tough fuels. This just goes to show that things are drying out pretty fast and wildfire season is here.”

The Colorado Department of Fire Prevention and Control and Upper Colorado River Interagency Crew each responded with an engine and crew.
