CenturyLink working to restore phone, internet service

Staff report
A screenshot from the site www.downdetector.com shows a spike in CenturyLink outage reports in Aspen and Carbondale, among other U.S. cities, on Tuesday.

Pitkin County sent out several emergency alerts Tuesday evening following widespread phone and Internet outages that begin in Aspen earlier in the day.

CenturyLink was working to restore service Tuesday night, according to the alerts, but there was no word on when that would happen at press time.

The CenturyLink website also was down, and calls to CenturyLink didn’t get past automated voice recordings. CenturyLink hadn’t posted anything on its Facebook or Twitter accounts as of 10 p.m., either.

A website that tracks reports of outages, http://www.downdetector.com, showed hundreds of outage reports in Denver, Aspen, Basalt, Glenwood Springs, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Tampa, Seattle, Trenton, and Carbondale.

Pitkin County sent out about 10 emergency alerts between 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. reminding residents experiencing emergencies to go to the nearest police or fire station should a call to 9-1-1 not go through.
