Major projects planned on Highway 133 between Carbondale and Redstone

Staff report

Three projects over the next several months will lead to travel restrictions on Highway 133 between Carbondale and Redstone, the Colorado Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

CDOT awarded a $4.07 million contract to Oldcastle SW Group of Grand Junction for the project. It involves work on bridges, removal of rocks from slopes adjacent to the highway and resurfacing. The resurfacing is scheduled to run from the end of May to mid-September. That will affect vehicles as well as bicycle travel on the popular touring route.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to start Monday with work on the structures of three bridges. The work will include repairs to bridge joints and guardrails. The projects will be at the Coak Creek Bridge at mile marker 51.6, the Thompson Creek bridge at mile marker 62.8 and the Crystal River at mile marker 65.8.

The next phase will involve bringing rock down off slopes at four locations. The rock scaling will begin the week of March 23, if weather permits. The locations of the work are at mile marker 52.6 between the north and south entrances to Redstone, mile marker 55.6 near Penny Hot Springs, mile marker 58.3 about 1 mile north of Avalanche Creek and mile marker 60.1, about 2 miles south of BRB campground.

“The project scope encompasses from mile marker 50 south of Redstone and continues north 16.30 miles to approximately mile marker 66.30, south of the town of Carbondale,” CDOT wrote in a statement. “A pilot car service will be implemented at times during this project to minimize traffic delays.”

The resurfacing will include rotomilling and a heating and remixing treatment followed by chip sealing.

The agency said: “Lane closures will occur for the duration of the project and speeds will be reduced to 35 mph through the work zone. Depending on how much material is scaled, delays could be about 20 minutes. Vehicles wider than 12 feet will be restricted through the project.”

A community open house for this project is planned for mid-April. More details will be released as the date comes closer.
