Body in river ID'd

Authorities have identified the body that was found in the Roaring Fork River on Monday evening.

Patrick Dirk Lane, 59, of Aspen, was recovered from the river after 7 p.m. by the Aspen Fire Swift Water Team, according to a statement issued early Thursday morning from the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office. The cause of death is pending, and no foul play is suspected, the statement said.

Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Alex Burchetta said the body was found in shallow water near some rocks about three-quarters of a mile west of Stein Park, off McLain Flats Road. Lane is believed to have been a local transient, Burchetta said.

A fishing guide came across the body and reported it to emergency dispatchers, he said. The Sheriff’s Office then notified the water team.

“We don’t go into the water for safety reasons; they are trained to be in the water,” Burchetta said of the water team. “They helped us remove the body from the water.”

The Coroner’s Office handled the notifications of Lane’s next of kin, he added.
