Body found in river near Redstone

Two kayakers from Gunnison County discovered a body in the Crystal River on Saturday afternoon, according to a statement from the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.

According to Rob Goodwin, deputy chief with the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District, an eight-person swift-water rescue team from the district responded to the scene, which was about a half-mile south of Hays Creek Falls near mile marker 49 of Highway 133.

Goodwin said the death did not appear to have been recent due to its state of decomposition. He declined to comment on whether it might be the body of Uriah Shaffer, a 39-year-old kayaker who went missing in the Crystal River near Marble in June.

The fire district recovered the body with help from the kayakers and turned the case over to Pitkin County shortly after 5 p.m., Goodwin said.

The Pitkin County coroner was working with the Gunnison County Coroner’s Office to identify the body and then to notify next of kin, according to the statement, and Gunnison County will be the primary agency investigating the case.
