Aspen Center for Physics to host lecture on Thursday

The Aspen Center for Physics continues its free lecture series at 6:30 today at Paepcke Auditorium.

The scheduled speaker is Joe Lykken, who recently was appointed deputy director of the Illinois-based Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, better known as Fermilab. Lykken will describe Fermilab’s Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment, a world-class program in neutrino physics that will explore physics beyond the standard model.

Other events on tap this summer at the Aspen Center for Physics include the following:

• Today, 5 p.m., Aspen Center for Physics — Kids picnic, “The Physics of Climbing.”

• Wednesday, 5 p.m., Aspen Center for Physics — Kids picnic, “Cool Jobs.”

• July 17, 5:30 p.m., Aspen Center for Physics — Free physics dialogue with Joe Polchinski, of the University of California, Santa Barbara. The topic will be “Spacetime Versus the Quantum.”

July 24, 5:30 p.m., Aspen Center for Physics — Free physics dialogue with Eva Silverstein, of Stanford University. The topic will be “Cosmic Inflation, Quantum Physics, and Primordial Gravity Waves.”

• July 30, 5:30 p.m., Aspen Center for Physics — Kids picnic.

• July 31, 5:30 p.m., Aspen Center for Physics — Free physics dialogue with R. Shankar, of Yale University. The topic will be “The Tragic Tale of the Mathematical Genius Ramanujan.”

• Aug. 6, 7:30 p.m., Aspen Center for Physics — Stargazing and star stories with Spellbinders.

• Aug. 7, 6:30 p.m., Paepcke Auditorium — Free physics lecture with A. Douglas Stone, of Yale University. The topic will be “Conflicted Genius: A New Perspective on Einstein’s Science.”

Aug. 14, 5:30 p.m., Aspen Center for Physics — free physics dialogue with Vijay Balasubramanian, of the University of Pennsylvania. The topic will be “The Maps Inside Your Head.”
