Basalt kicks off summer with car show, Sunday Market

Basalt is kicking off its special events for the summer on Saturday with the third annual Motors on Midland car show.

The hot rods and cool cars will be lined up on Midland Avenue from 5 to 9 p.m. More than 40 cars and more than 500 observers are expected. There will be live music with Sleight of Hand along with cold brews in a beer garden and food from vendors. A prize will be awarded to the best car in show.

Motors on Midland is a featured event on a packed weekend in Basalt.

Downtown merchants are putting on their monthly Moonstruck event today starting at 6 p.m. Shops, galleries and restaurants throughout downtown are offering various specials.

Back on Saturday, the Wyly Art Center is hosting three events. There will be a Lemonade Stand Building Contest from 5 to 7 p.m. Kids are invited to set up their lemonade stands downtown and sell their special recipes. A contest will be held for the best lemonade stand during the Motors on Midland show.

The Wyly also is holding a free Chalk Art Contest with the theme “Wheels, Wheels, Wheels.” It will be held downtown in conjunction with the car show. Chalk will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to best in show, for participants 14 and older and for youth.

The Wyly also is holding an opening reception Saturday for an exhibit by Michelle Lehman titled “Hope: Light Is Within Us” from 5 to 7 p.m. The center is located at 99 Midland Spur.

The Sunday Market will kick off its sixth year on Sunday on Midland Spur and in Lions Park. The market will be held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Sept. 28. There will be 30 full-time and as many as four rotating vendors each week.

The citizen-organized event was launched in June 2009.
