Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers is launching Climb for Trails, a summer-long, valleywide event to benefit trail and restoration work on local public lands. The event will run from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Volunteers can participate individually or assemble a team with friends, family, coworkers or club members.
Register at ClimbForTrails.org, gather some sponsors or pledges, and then log every hike, bike or run you make on the trail of your choice. Participants can register anytime, and climbs can be logged from now through Sept. 1.
The Climb for Trails concept is modeled after the Climb the King event in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In 2012, that event had 840 climbers, including 58 teams, make 9,001 climbs.
“We estimate that our regional community is about 21/2 times larger than greater Jackson Hole, so our goal is to have 2,000 climbers participating by 2015 or 2016,” said David Hamilton, executive director of Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers.
The nonprofit has expanded on the concept by making Climb for Trails a valleywide event that includes trails throughout the valley, with an emphasis on the most popular hikes in each community: Smuggler in Aspen, Rim Trail in Snowmass Village, Red Mountain/Jeanne Golay Trail in Glenwood Springs and Colorow Trail in New Castle. Due to current regulations and access concerns, Red Hill cannot be used, so Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers has an “other” category that expands the event to include any trail not on BLM lands.
Businesses can create a team or multiple teams from different departments and create informal competitions to encourage individual health and team-building benefits. If your business, club or organization would like to participate, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 970-927-8241.
Event sponsors to date include Alpine Bank, Valley View Hospital, Summit Canyon Mountaineering/Patagonia, The Aspen Times, the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority Rio Grande Trail, Valley View Hospital, Treadz, Timbers Resort, Ute Mountaineer, KSPN Radio and Reese and Henry & Co. Inc.
