Mark Gray, who has been the band director at Carbondale Middle School for 13 years and Roaring Fork High School for nine years, was awarded the 2014 JAS Outstanding Instructor Award. According to a JAS statement, “Mark has been a crucial part of the JAS Honor Jazz program hosted at RFHS each year and is currently leading two of the best jazz programs in the valley at the middle and high schools.”

“I have been very fortunate to work with supportive administrators, staff and parents,” Gray said. “We started with a small program of not much music, and I feel that we have been able to put some musical excitement back into the program.

“Chris Bank and JAS have been there almost the whole way with us. The amount of energy they have infused into our programs has been a huge part of our growth and ability to move forward. They have also been a significant help in my personal development as a music educator and professional.”

JAS also recognized its 2014 Band Battle winners:

• Best Garage Band — Big Dog & the Midnite Badgers

• Best Singer/Songwriter — Izzy Mata

• Best Middle School Band — Carbondale Flex Band
