Richard Sandoval — owner of Venga Venga Cantina and Tequila Bar in Snowmass Village — has signed a lease for the Mill Street pedestrian mall space previously occupied by Above the Salt with the intention of opening in mid-June, before the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen.
Clayton Warwick, regional marketing manager for Richard Sandoval Restaurants, did not offer details on the length of the lease, but he said the new Mexican restaurant will be similar in concept to the Snowmass location.
“Richard did sign the lease, and we will be opening in mid-June,” he said. “We’re really excited to be part of the community.”
The space, located at 305 S. Mill St., is owned by 305-7 Mill Street LLC, which is controlled by Chicago businessman Mark Hunt. Aspen restaurateur Craig Cordts-Pearce closed Above the Salt following the 2013 summer season, and the building has been shuttered since.
Warwick said Venga Venga Aspen will sit 180 people between the inside dining area and three patios. Another 15 to 20 will fit at the bar, he said. The Snowmass location offers 75 tequilas and mezcals.
“The menu will be similar to (the Snowmass location), and the decor will fit the Venga Venga brand,” Warwick said. “It’s not going to be anything radically different, maybe some subtle nuances.”
A Mexico City native, Sandoval has helped open 35 restaurants and concepts from California, Arizona and Colorado to Dubai, Qatar and Serbia.
