Basalt's Green Team withers

The last man standing on Basalt’s volunteer environmental committee is calling it quits.

Basalt resident Gerry Terwilliger said all the former members of the committee, known as The Green Team, have quit the board and no replacements have been found. The committee was responsible for helping install solar photovoltaic panels at Basalt Middle School and the public pool. It also established policies such as the two-minute vehicle idling limit.

The board typically had a member of the Town Council among its ranks, but no elected official has been participating for some time, Terwilliger said.

“We’re really not existent anymore,” he said. “I’m going to put a fork in it for now.”

Basalt Mayor Jacque Whitsitt said the town is undertaking an extensive downtown land-use planning effort that is probably distracting from some of its standing committees. Once that is finished, maybe efforts such as The Green Team will be reinvigorated, she said.

“We have a lot of irons in the fire right now,” Whitsitt said.
