On The Hill: Examining the "snirt" effect

On the Hill, brought to you by The Steadman Clinic and the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, brings you a video report showcasing Aspen's ski conditions every day.

VIDEO: Aspen Times mountain correspondent Corby Anderson delivers his daily video conditions report almost-live from Aspen Mountain. | |

Aspen official report: 0" of new snow overnight, 0" in the past 48 hours, and 0" in the past week.

Aspen Times field report: A light snow is falling this morning, with sunny splotches. Spring skiing means being able to adapt to wildly varied snow throughout the mountain, often in the course of just one run. An interesting phenomenom here in Colorado in the spring is an almost annual "snirting" - dirty snow. It's gritty, colorful, and can actually cause the snowpack to diminish.

Liftline status: Not too bad for a Sunday!

Snowcast: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. Northwest wind 5 to 15 mph.

Sunday Night: 50 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 18. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Monday: A 20 percent chance of snow showers before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 17.
